Sorry Jim, we all have our own opinions on this and that is one that I do no subscribe to.
Why would oil that has only done approx. 800 miles be full of contaminants??

One of my earliest memories from reading Bike many years ago was one of their journalists writing, "Oil is cheap and engines are expensive."

Made sense to me then, makes sense to me now.

Manufacturers give service intervals for a reason.

If your going to change oil on an annual basis don't be conned by must be done at 12 months if it hasn't reached service interval, change it in the spring when you bring bike out of hibernation that's the time when temperature is low that condensation can form in crankcase and hence mix with the oil. Other than that oil does not have a 12 month shelf life

Our bikes are 7500 miles or 1 year
My car 12500 miles or 1 year
My truck is 125000 miles or 1 year
All very different machines, but one thing in common is 1 year oil change intervals.

J&S Northwitch £124. For 600 mile service they did say £110.When I booked it over the phone they said this was only an estimate . Robinsons wanted £160.

This must be an individual dealer price.

I went through a blitz of new bikes over a few years.

4 triumphs / 1 ZZR1400 / 1 Ducati Diavel and all of the dealers 1st service was free apart from oil and filter.

that's in Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Just had my 600 mile service done at Tilsons Stockton - with free oil filter service came to £156 - M&S at Newcastle wanted £140 is they said but easier for me to take to Tilsons ... my view is there should be standard charges like some car garages 🤷‍♂️

I think bike (and car) manufacturers specify one year intervals is just to ensure that they get some business.  Plus I guess there is an argument that this is a reasonable period at which it is sensible for the bike to get a basic check done anyway.   In the Pre-mot period that is probably more important.

Lets be honest, with the rate of use of some bikes if the service period was 6 or 10 thousand miles as is the capability of the oil, it could take many years before some bikes actually needed a service.

I subscribe to the many sentiments in this thread.  I don't believe that oil that has stood in an unused bike in a sealed system deteriorates or gains contaminants.  But also that oil is cheap and an oil and filter change is easy.

2017 Z1000SX, in black.  Roughly 70000 miles and 8 years on SXs.

Just my own preference but as well as standard servicing, oil and filter change every year, bleed and flush brake fluid every year (or before of needed). they're all crucial parts to a healthy working bike, cheap & easy enough to do yourself.
