Hopefully at some point a specialist repair company will offer a repair service. The failed components can't cost much to replace and there would be a ready market at £500, so lots of financial incentive to develop a fix (involving cutting open from back and reseal afterwards I guess)?

I think that's very likely too

I would repair rather than pay £1000!! Or try that first.
My LED units were £30 from China and have been on for 8K miles in horrendous weather, no issues except the noise of their fans when the ignition is on but not running.

It's a sealed unit - quite how you open it up and reseal it so it doesn't fill with condensation and kill the LED, no one knows.  Certainly no one is offering that service either right now.
