I use Shell V-Power, not 100% of the time but a lot and I use it mainly for the cleaning agents, but 99 RON performs noticeably better than standard 95 RON. I would not pay extra for 97 RON though if I'm paying more I want 99.

 :461:  far better burn in the cylinder, always  find smoother accel/throttle response and idle using shell. whether v-power or std shell unleaded, just better fuel. Don't use all the time as above as justifying the price increase. I also note a slight increase in mpg.

Hate Asda, Tesco fuel, its like running on watered down petrol and the engine runs like a pig, again same noted in the car. Sainsbury's and jet are not too bad and I find a decent alternative
I note same in the car as well...

Long time ago (1989) on a GPZ750R, indeed, the higher the octane, the better the bike runs on altitudes. With OCT95 on 4000m USA hights, it just won't start in the morning and runs badly. For today, with my z1000sx 2018; I have a little warning sign still in my brain: When on holiday's and touching altitude (Dolomites), I always fuell up as high Octane as possible. Still needed these days on modern machines? Not shure... but i still remember the hussle those days.... and do not want that anymore.
Jawa 350 (1980-‘81), CB750 Four K1 (‘81-‘82), CB750F2 (‘82-‘85), GPZ750 (‘86-‘89), CBX750 (‘90), GPX750R (‘90-2000), -Kids Break-,  Bandit 1250 (‘12-‘17), Z1000sx (‘18->)

I've tried it a few times and never noticed any difference? I've always used the cheapest fuel available and never ever had any issues at all on any of my vehicles I've had over the years and personally think it's a load of bollox I've never had anyone overtake me because they had super duper fuel and I've never had an argument about my spark plugs are cleaner than yours down the pub :745:  I'd rather keep my 30 pence a litre and buy a burger lol

I filled up with regular 85 over last 2 tanks and found my mpg dropped from 41 42 ish to 39. It might be my heavy right hand though but have gone back to premium to see if there is any difference. I understand the cleaning agents also coat the back of valves? I could be wrong though (it's not a direct injection engine is it?)

If you put in 85 I'm not surprised your mpg dropped.  :001:
