Front brake disc query
« on: October 30, 2018, 08:40:05 PM »
Evening all. I have recently been experiencing a slight 'judder' through the front brake lever. My first thoughts were-need to do a proper clean of the disc bobbins. I tried to do the nut and bolt rotation of the bobbins whilst applying aerosol brake cleaner but found that they were not going to rotate, albeit there was a little lateral movement on the disc when I "grabbed a handful". The bike has aftermarket ebc discs fitted and I remembered reading the ebc blurb that there have patented square internal bobbing mountings which I suspect would preclude being able to rotate said items. If that's the case I cant see any recourse but to replace the discs when they get too bad. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yep, EBC rotor bobbins are different: https://ebcbrakes.com/articles/the-facts-about-floating-motorcycle-rotors-or-discs-by-ebc-brakes/

How old are your discs and pads  :027:

I bought the bike in a early june this year and they were already on it so I can't tell.  The bike had 7k on it then and now its 11k. I did a Scottish tour in October when the weather was atrocious with cold and torrential rain and its since then that I've noticed the slight judder on the brakes. I did the slow speed test on a smooth surface and yep-the braking does 'surge' if that's the right word.

Thanks for that link Mdr on the ebc rotors.. It was very helpful. I stripped and cleaned the calipers, sprayed and wiggled the rotor bobbins last night and had hoped to go for a spin on it this morning but there is still a ground frost here and the gritters were out last night there is no way I'll be taking it out until we have a good downpour to clean the roads. Being pessimistic, I suspect that new discs will be needed if it gets worse. The ebc  info and their logic for making the bobbins square  does look like a clever idea but it does stuff you if you're trying to clean and hopefully prolong the life of your discs. :003:

I replaced my discs and pads earlier this year with EBC and am very happy with them  :028:

Don't rate Brembo for anything other than initial performance. They drop off to quickly in my experience  :006:

That about the Brembo's would have scuppered me as they were what I was going to get had I needed to replace the discs. We can read all we want about a product but there is no substitute for personal experience.  :828:. I've always been cr*p at patience so  I have just got back from test riding the bike and lo and behold, the judder'ette has gone and the braking is back to normal with a smooth feel at the lever. The bike was serviced at 7300 miles but clearly you have to keep on top of the cleanliness of the discs and pads between services. That is no hardship really as they are simple to work on but it was a wake up call for me . Thanks for the input mdr you have been a great help  :031:

You're  :401: but it's just my personal experience, others will say something else...

Glad your judder seems to have improved  :028:

Thats a good point. I think you might be on to something.  As if the race pads are not meant for long term use? Maybe they are better used for a track day, or such, but not something you would buy for your bike and be running the same set of pads 2 years, and 5000 miles later?

Ive had really good luck with the Vesrah brand pads. Durable, quiet and powerful.  Also, the performance did not fall off after a few months use.
